The mission of the State Fire Marshals Office (SFMO) is to prevent the loss of life and property due to fire.

How you make a difference in this role:

The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI) is seeking a motivated and passionate fire prevention and codes professional with management experience, exceptional communication skills, and a proven ability to lead for the role of Assistant Commissioner of the Fire Prevention Division.

Job Overview:

This position is executive service, reports directly to the Deputy Commissioner/Chief of Staff, and serves as a member of the Commissioners executive leadership team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing oversight of the Fire Prevention Divisions (State Fire Marshals Office) regulatory and licensing functions, daily fire prevention and codes enforcement activities, division operations, legislative initiatives, budgetary matters, and the enforcement of all related policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Provides oversight and direction of Fire Prevention Divisions program areas, which include the Administration Section, the Codes Enforcement Section, the Housing and Electrical Inspection Section, the Permits and Licensing Section, the Manufactured Housing Section, the Fire Fighting Commission (FFC), and the TN Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy (TFACA).

2. Provides oversight and direction of a state-wide staff of 275+ full and part-time fire and building, electrical, and manufactured housing inspectors, TFACA instructors, FFC coordinators, and fire prevention, administrative and licensing personnel.

3. Provides oversight and direction of the divisions operations, which includes managing an annual operating budget of approximately $29.5 million and the disbursement of $15 million in grant funds.

4. Provides oversight and direction of the divisions regulatory, licensing, and permitting functions.

5. Maintains regular contact with relevant local, state, and federal representatives and national fire prevention and building codes organizations.

Required Experience:

Preferred candidates possess a Bachelors degree, legislative and management experience, exceptional written and oral communications and interpersonal skills, and the ability to establish priorities among changing agendas from the multiple sections within the Division and external entities.
